When should you have baby’s name picked out?
It’s totally up to you! There’s no hard and fast rule on this. Some people like to know the baby’s name early into pregnancy, while others prefer to wait until they meet their baby.
If you’re a planner, probably the sooner the better. If you like to wing it, you could have some names ready and then wait until you meet your baby.
Choosing the name was my favorite part of pregnancy, so I found out the sex as soon as possible and began choosing names around the same time. But everyone is different.
Can I change my baby’s name?
Okay, so yes you can but also it’ll be a bit of a pain once it’s “legal”.
Most states allow between 3-21 days after birth but you may have up to a year before you need to send in the birth certificate and make it legal.
Once it’s legal, it’s a process to change it, so you will ideally choose the name you’ll stick with for your baby when mailing the birth certificate.
More about this here and here and here.
Can I choose a random name for the middle name- not meaningful?
Absolutely!
If you just like the sound of the first and middle name together, go for it!
If you like the initials, or the flow, or the vibe, or the meaning of the name but it doesn’t hold any personal significance to you, that is a-okay.
A lot of people do use the middle name to celebrate a person close to them, passing down a name that was special, but that isn’t a rule and you can do what you’d like!
My middle son doesn’t have a family middle name, even though our other two sons do. We chose a middle name that had a meaning we liked and it flowed well with his first name.
It really is up to you.

Final Thoughts
Choosing a first and middle name for your baby girl is a deeply personal and meaningful process.
Here are some final thoughts to consider:
- Meaning and Significance: Think about the meanings and significance behind the names you’re considering. Whether it’s a family name, a name with a special meaning, or one that represents qualities you admire, choose names that resonate with you and hold significance for your family.
- Sound and Flow: Pay attention to the sound and flow of the names together. Say the full name out loud to see how it rolls off the tongue. Make sure it sounds harmonious and pleasing to you.
- Consider the Future: Remember that your child will carry this name throughout their life. Consider how the name might be perceived in different stages of life, from childhood to adulthood. Choose a name that will grow with your child and suit them in various contexts.
- Individuality and Uniqueness: While trendy and popular names can be appealing, consider the importance of individuality. Choosing a unique name can make your child stand out and reflect their unique personality.
- Family and Cultural Heritage: Explore family traditions and cultural heritage when selecting a name. Incorporating family names or names that honor your cultural background can add depth and meaning to your child’s identity.
- Trust Your Instincts: Ultimately, trust your instincts and go with the name that feels right for your baby girl. It’s a decision that comes from the heart, and as long as the name holds significance and resonates with you, it will be perfect for your little one.
- Flexibility and Openness: Be open to different possibilities and consider multiple options. Sometimes, the perfect name may come to you unexpectedly or evolve as you explore different choices.
Above all, cherish the process of choosing a name for your baby girl.
It’s a special part of welcoming her into the world and celebrating her uniqueness.
The love and care you give her will be what truly defines her identity.
