Coloring Tips for Kids
Mix up the colors
Kids don’t always have to stick to traditional colors. Encourage them to think outside the box! A snowman doesn’t always have to be white, and candy canes don’t have to be just red and white.
Let them experiment with rainbow snowflakes or pink reindeer! It’s a fun way to boost creativity and make their artwork stand out with unexpected pops of color.
Add a little sparkle
If you have glitter glue, metallic markers, or even stickers, let the kids go wild with them! Adding some shimmer to their drawings will make them feel like they’ve created something really special.
Whether it’s sparkling snow, shiny ornaments, or a shimmering star on top of the tree, that extra bit of sparkle can make their work pop and bring the holiday spirit to life.
Layer colors
Teach kids how to layer their coloring for a cool effect. Start by coloring lightly, then go over it with a slightly darker shade or a different color to give it depth and texture.
For example, when coloring a tree, they could start with light green and add darker green to the edges.
This makes their artwork look more detailed and gives a cool 3D effect, which they’ll be super proud of!
Stay inside the lines (or not!)
While staying inside the lines can help improve focus and fine motor skills, it’s important for kids to remember that coloring is about having fun! If they go outside the lines or get a little messy, that’s totally okay.
Art is all about personal expression, and sometimes the best ideas happen when they let go of perfection and just enjoy themselves.
Add their own details
Coloring pages are a great base, but why stop there? Encourage kids to add their own little doodles or extra elements to the pages. Maybe they can draw some snow falling around a snowman, or extra presents under the tree.
This helps boost their imagination and makes the finished product feel more like their own creation. The possibilities are endless, and adding personal touches helps kids feel proud of their artistic flair!

Click the images to open up the PDF coloring page. You’ll then be able to save the coloring page to your device and print it from your home printer. (You’ll need Adobe to open the pages) I recommend cardstock paper but you’re welcome to use printer paper. Cardstock paper is thicker and less apt to tear or wrinkle and may offer a better coloring experience. Coloring pages will print at 8.5×11 inches in size.
